Palo Alto sits just north-west of Mountain View and holds one of the largest concentrations of Eichler homes anywhere. In south Palo Alto, Greenmeadow has around 270 to 300 mid-century houses from the mid-1950s, Fairmeadow roughly 300 more, and Charleston Meadows a tract of a hundred or so built around 1950–51. Elsewhere in the city, older neighbourhoods have Craftsman and period houses with detached garages.
Many of those tracts were drawn with open carports instead of enclosed garages, and families have been closing them in ever since. Turning a carport into a garage means a new opening framed to take a sectional door, a header strong enough to carry the track, and power for an operator — and on a post-and-beam roof there is rarely space above the door for a standard rail. We plan the door and its operator together with whoever frames the opening, so it fits the first time instead of being adapted afterwards.
