Los Altos borders Mountain View to the west and keeps a quieter, almost rural character — many residential streets have no sidewalks, and lots are generous. South of El Monte, around Loyola Corners and Rancho, single-storey ranch houses on quarter-acre lots are the norm. In central Los Altos, streets such as Parma Way and Echo Drive have lots approaching 15,000 square feet, and many of the original ranches have been heavily remodelled or rebuilt.
Larger houses mean larger garages: two- and three-car openings, oversized custom doors, wood and wood-look carriage doors, and side-entry garages set well back from the street. Those doors are heavy, so springs and openers have to be specified for their true weight, and custom doors need a careful match if a section is damaged. Mature oaks and long driveways also bring leaves and debris into tracks and onto bottom seals, which is worth a look on any service visit.

We reach Los Altos quickly from El Camino Real, and heavy custom doors and three-car openings are routine for us here. Long driveways and deep lots put many garages out of sight of the house, so problems go unnoticed for a while: a door reversing at the floor for weeks, a seal chewed through by rodents, a wood carriage door whose joints have opened after several dry summers. On heavy wood doors we check hinge screws and stiles as well as springs, because the weight works the joints loose. Side-entry garages get their clearances measured before any track change.
